Design Thinking: Innovation & Creativity

Can creativity be learned? Design thinking takes the complex challenge of generating creative ideas by breaking down the process into simple, discrete steps that build on each other to rapidly create appropriate and innovative solutions.

Empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test, and implement. These six phases, the fundamentals of design thinking, are the core concepts of this course. Using these techniques, small teams of students will explore selected topics and projects that invite innovative collaboration while simultaneously encouraging independent decision making.

Design Thinking is versatile with skills that can be applied to nearly any context ranging from educational goals to social interactions.  Design thinking has been used to facilitate innovation across a broad range of industries including technology, medical care, sports and fitness, the energy sector, and environmental conservation. The process can also be used to better understand and interpret historical events, contemporary issues in our lives, and speculation about our futures.

Students will leave this class with a firm understanding not only of “What Is Design Thinking?”, but also how these “human-centered” techniques relate to our lives today.

Joel Simon

After earning three degrees at Stanford, including a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Product Design, Joel teamed up with the Stanford Alumni Association to collaboratively create and design educational group tours spanning the globe. This expertise, combined with an entrepreneurial spirit, led Joel to create Sea for Yourself, Inc. a specialized travel company representing Joel’s passion for travel, marine biology, photography, and Design Thinking!

For the past 12 years, Joel has been creating and teaching curricula in Visual Storytelling, Design Thinking, and Photography at Stanford University, including the d. School to undergraduate, alumni, and international high school students. These courses have been taught primarily through Stanford Continuing Studies, the Alumni Association, Stanford Summer Session, Stanford Program for the Arts, Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies and Eduexplora.

Joel is a popular lecturer on Design Thinking, Travel Photography, and Underwater Photography and as an editor at Skin Diver Magazine, has written and published many travel-related articles and short stories. His photographs have been published in many major publications including Vanity Fair, Sunset Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle, and covers of Stanford Magazine where he was also the lead photographer for the books "Jasper Ridge, A Stanford Sanctuary", and "Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Change", published by the Stanford Business School. His images are used often by the Stanford Office of Development, and he signed a book on the creation of the Bing Performing Arts Center on the Stanford campus titled "Building the Bing".

Additionally, Joel humbly admits to being taught how to text by his three teen-age daughters … although they still rate him among the slowest texters on the planet.
